Stealer is a term used in two main contexts. In everyday language, a stealer is someone who steals. In computing, a stealer (often called an information stealer or infostealer) refers to software designed to extract and exfiltrate sensitive data from a victim’s device. Infostealers have been observed across various malware campaigns and can target credentials, payment card details, browser cookies and autofill data, cryptocurrency wallets, and other personal information. The stolen data is typically transmitted to an attacker or a remote server for fraudulent use.

Operation and distribution methods vary, but common delivery channels include phishing emails, malicious links, fake software updates, and bundled installers. Once installed, stealer software searches for stored credentials, cookies, session tokens, and data in web browsers, password managers, and other applications. Some stealers employ keylogging, form grabbing, or data exfiltration techniques to maximize harvest. They may operate as standalone payloads or as modules within larger malware families, and often rely on command-and-control infrastructure to receive updates or exfiltrate data.

Impact of stealer activity can be significant, including credential compromise, unauthorized financial transactions, identity theft, and corporate data breaches. Individuals and organizations can mitigate risk through layered security measures such as up-to-date endpoint protection, regular software patching, multi-factor authentication, principle of least privilege, user education to recognize phishing, and monitoring for unusual data access or exfiltration. Encryption of sensitive data at rest and in transit, along with secure credential storage practices, also helps reduce potential damage.
