Origin and etymology: The word derives from an Italian root related to disdain or disregard, but in the sense of sprezzatura it signifies presenting skill without appearing to labor for it. The concept gained prominence through Baldassare Castiglione’s The Book of the Courtier (Il libro del cortegiano), published in 1528, where the ideal courtier masterfully exerts control over dress, speech, and manner to seem natural and unforced.
