A spotlight is a high-intensity lighting instrument designed to illuminate a specific area or performer on stage, film set, or architectural installation. It produces a focused beam with a narrow angle, enabling selective illumination while other areas remain relatively dark. Spotlights are distinguished from floodlights by their ability to hard-edge the beam and the ability to be aimed, focused, and often color-tuned.

Most spotlights combine a light source, a reflector, and a lens system to shape and direct the beam. Traditional stage spots use tungsten-halogen or arc lamps, while modern units frequently employ LEDs. The beam can be adjusted with shutters, an iris, and, in some models, a gobos or color filters. Light is controlled through dimming and, in contemporary venues, via DMX512 or wireless control for pan, tilt, color, and gobo patterns.

Common types include Fresnel spotlights with a soft-edged beam and a foldable lens, and Ellipsoidal Reflector Spotlights (ERS) with precise edge control and interchangeable lenses. PAR spotlights provide a compact, high-intensity, narrow beam. Moving-head spotlights are motorized, allowing pan, tilt, zoom, color mixing, and pattern projection; followspots are manually operated or remote-controlled to track a performer. LED spotlights are increasingly prevalent due to efficiency and color versatility.

The term spotlight derives from the practice of producing a bright, focused beam to illuminate a performer. The concept evolved from lime-powered limelight in the 19th century to electric stage lighting in the 20th century, enabling more precise control and color.

In use, spotlights require attention to heat management, electrical safety, and lamp or LED life. Proper focusing and aiming are essential to avoid glare and unwanted spill, while regular maintenance ensures consistent performance.
