Each spinnen unit typically includes a spinning head or spinneret, a fiber or polymer reservoir, micro-actuated drives, energy storage or harvesting capability, and a sensing and control module. Units can operate individually to deposit fibers or coordinate in swarms to weave, lay down layers, or repair fabric by directed deposition and bonding. Communication among units supports pattern following, fault tolerance, and reconfiguration in real time.

History and development of spinnens emerge from advances in additive manufacturing, swarm robotics, and textile science. Early demonstrations focused on proof-of-concept coordination and basic deposition, with ongoing research exploring material compatibility, energy efficiency, and integration with existing textile processes.
