The term "spiegelreflex" originates from German, where *spiegel* means "mirror" and *reflex* refers to the reflection of light. The core design of an SLR camera includes a mirror that directs light from the lens to a pentaprism or pentamirror, which then reflects it to the optical viewfinder.
