Spheroidites are a microstructural constituent found in steels, characterized by a distribution of spheroidal carbide particles within an alpha-ferrite matrix. This structure arises from a heat treatment process known as spheroidization, which involves prolonged heating of steel at temperatures just below the lower critical temperature, followed by slow cooling. The goal of spheroidization is to soften the steel, making it more ductile and easier to machine or cold-form.

The process of spheroidization transforms brittle, elongated carbides, such as those found in pearlite or bainite, into rounded, spherical shapes. This change in morphology significantly reduces the stress concentrations associated with sharp carbide edges, leading to improved toughness and reduced susceptibility to fracture. Spheroidite is often achieved by heating steels for extended periods, allowing diffusion to occur and drive the surface energy reduction associated with forming spheres.

The formation and presence of spheroidite are typically observed through microscopic examination of steel samples. The appearance of spheroidite is distinct, with discrete, rounded particles scattered throughout a continuous ferrite matrix. This microstructure is highly desirable for applications requiring significant cold working or where maximum ductility and toughness are paramount. For example, spheroidized steels are commonly used in the production of wires, fasteners, and tubing. While it offers excellent ductility, spheroidite generally exhibits lower tensile strength compared to other steel microstructures like martensite or bainite.
