Spendýra is a species of small terrestrial mammals belonging to the genus Spenidya. Endemic to the mountainous regions of southeastern Europe, spendýra are notable for their adaptive capabilities and distinctive physical features. They typically measure between 10 to 15 centimeters in length, with a tail that adds an additional 5 to 8 centimeters.

These creatures have a compact body covered in dense, soft fur that ranges in coloration from shades of brown to gray, providing effective camouflage in their natural rocky and forested habitats. Spendýra possess sharp claws and keen senses of smell and hearing, which aid in foraging and predator avoidance.

Dietarily, spendýra are primarily omnivorous, feeding on a variety of insects, small invertebrates, seeds, and plant material. They are known to be nocturnal, becoming most active during dusk and nighttime hours, which helps them avoid predators during daylight.

Reproductive behavior varies within the species but generally involves several litters per year, with females giving birth to 2 to 4 offspring after a gestation period of approximately 20 days. Young spendýra are born blind and completely dependent on their mother, developing rapidly over a few weeks.

Spendýra play a vital role in their ecosystems as prey for larger predators and as participants in seed dispersal and insect control. While currently not considered endangered, their populations face threats from habitat loss due to forestry, agriculture, and urban development.
