Spatial relations are conceptual relationships that describe how objects are positioned relative to one another in space. They specify the arrangement of items, focusing on order, orientation, and distance rather than exact coordinates.

Spatial relations are often grouped into qualitative and quantitative categories. Qualitative relations describe relative position without measuring distances. They include topological relations (such as inside, outside, intersecting, or disjoint), directional relations (such as north of, to the left of, in front of), and distance categories (near, far). In contrast, quantitative or metric relations use precise measurements, such as exact coordinates or Euclidean distance.

Frames of reference determine how positions are interpreted. An intrinsic frame of reference locates relations with respect to the intrinsic attributes of an object (for example, the handle is to the east of the mug’s center). A relative frame uses the observer’s viewpoint, and an absolute frame uses fixed world coordinates.

Representations of spatial relations appear across disciplines. In geographic information systems and robotics, they are encoded in ontologies and used for queries, planning, and navigation. In artificial intelligence and cognitive science, qualitative spatial reasoning formalizes relations with logics and calculi such as RCC8. In natural language processing, spatial relations are grounded by mapping terms like “on,” “near,” or “behind” to corresponding spatial concepts.

Applications include robot navigation, scene understanding in computer vision, GIS analysis, and human–computer interaction. Challenges involve ambiguity across frames of reference, context dependence, cultural differences, and dynamic or cluttered environments.
