Songability is a term used to describe how suitable a song is for singing and performance. It reflects a blend of melodic, rhythmic, lyrical, and structural characteristics that influence how easily a vocalist can deliver a song with clarity and expressiveness. The term is used by songwriters, producers, coaches, and performers when selecting material or evaluating a draft arrangement.

Key factors include: vocal range and tessitura; melodic contour and interval leaps; tempo and rhythmic complexity; lyric intelligibility, diction, and density; phrasing and breath control; arrangement and accompaniment that support or hinder the vocal line; and song length and the presence of repeating sections that affect stamina and memorability.

Assessment is often subjective and context-dependent. Vocal coaches may annotate score sections that require a higher head voice or strong belting, while singers may rate a song’s comfort or challenge based on their training and technique. Some practitioners use typography of scores to mark ideal tessitura or simplify sections; others rely on audience reaction or market data to gauge songability in a given genre.
