Flat-plate collectors are the most common type, consisting of a dark absorber plate covered by a transparent cover. Evacuated tube collectors, which are more efficient but also more expensive, use a series of parallel glass tubes to reduce heat loss. Concentrating collectors, such as parabolic troughs and power towers, use mirrors to focus sunlight onto a receiver, which can reach very high temperatures.

The efficiency of a solar thermal system depends on several factors, including the type of collector, the orientation and tilt of the system, and the climate. In general, solar thermal systems are most efficient in sunny climates with mild winters. However, advancements in technology and materials science are continually improving the efficiency and reducing the cost of solar thermal systems, making them a viable option for a wider range of applications and locations.
