Sobakawa is a type of pillow whose filling consists of buckwheat hulls. The term comes from Japanese, with soba meaning buckwheat and kawa meaning husk. The pillow typically has a fabric cover, often cotton, and many models include a removable, washable outer cover.

The buckwheat hulls inside a sobakawa pillow are irregular and firm, but they shift to conform to the shape of the head and neck. This allows the pillow to provide support while helping keep the spine in alignment.
