Common uses include account sign-in verification, password resets, and transaction confirmations. Codes are typically numeric, often four to eight digits, and are valid for a short period, usually a few minutes, and are intended for single use. The SMS delivery step is typically triggered by a backend system, which generates the code and sends it to the user’s phone number.

Delivery relies on mobile networks and SMS gateways. Codes are routed to numbers formatted in E.164 where supported, and delivery times can vary. In some regions messages may incur carrier charges or experience delays, non-delivery, or duplication. System design often includes rate limiting and monitoring to detect abuse and ensure reliability.

Security considerations include the fact that SMS-based codes are vulnerable to risks such as SIM swapping, number porting, interception, and targeted phishing. While SMS OTPs provide an accessible factor of authentication, they are generally considered weaker than hardware tokens or authenticator apps. To reduce risk, many implementations use SMS as a backup or second factor only, enforce short expiry times, limit retries, and employ fraud detection.

Alternatives and best practices emphasize stronger options when possible. Time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) generated by authenticator apps, push-based authentication, and hardware security keys offer higher security but require additional user setup. When using smscode, organizations should evaluate risk, user experience, and provider reliability, and apply appropriate privacy protections.
