Slijmbeursontsteking, also known as bursitis, is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of a bursa. A bursa is a small, fluid-filled sac that acts as a cushion between bones, tendons, and muscles around joints. These bursae reduce friction and provide smooth movement. When a bursa becomes inflamed, it can cause pain, tenderness, and stiffness in the affected joint.

The most common causes of bursitis include overuse or repetitive motions, sudden trauma or injury to the joint, and prolonged pressure on a bursa. Conditions like gout and rheumatoid arthritis can also contribute to bursitis. The symptoms typically include a dull ache or burning sensation, especially with movement or pressure, and tenderness when the affected area is touched. Swelling and redness may also be present.

Bursitis can occur in various parts of the body, with common sites including the shoulder (subacromial bursitis), elbow (olecranon bursitis), hip (trochanteric bursitis), and knee (prepatellar bursitis). Diagnosis is usually based on a physical examination and the patient's medical history. In some cases, imaging tests like X-rays or ultrasound, or fluid aspiration from the bursa, may be used to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions.

Treatment for bursitis focuses on reducing inflammation and relieving pain. This often involves rest, avoiding activities that aggravate the condition, and applying ice to the affected area. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be prescribed to manage pain and inflammation. Physical therapy can help to strengthen surrounding muscles and improve range of motion. In persistent or severe cases, corticosteroid injections into the bursa or, rarely, surgical removal of the bursa may be considered. Prevention strategies include warming up before exercise, using proper techniques during physical activities, and avoiding prolonged pressure on joints.
