Skypunching is a term used to describe the visual phenomenon observed when an aircraft flies through certain atmospheric conditions, causing a brief, localized disruption in the appearance of the sky. This disruption typically manifests as a temporary distortion, darkening, or "punching" effect in the sky directly above or in the immediate vicinity of the aircraft. The effect is most commonly seen when the aircraft is flying at high altitudes, often through thin clouds or atmospheric haze.

The precise cause of skypunching is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to the interaction of sunlight with ice crystals or water droplets in the atmosphere, combined with the aerodynamic effects of the aircraft.
