Sklerozants are substances used in a medical procedure called sclerotherapy. This treatment involves injecting a sklerozant solution directly into a diseased blood vessel, such as a varicose vein or a hemorrhoid, or into a cyst. The sklerozant irritates the inner lining of the vessel or cyst, causing it to swell and eventually collapse. Over time, the treated vessel or cyst is replaced by scar tissue and is absorbed by the body.

There are various types of sklerozants, including chemical agents and foamed solutions. Chemical sklerozants, like sodium tetradecyl sulfate and polidocanol, are commonly used. Foamed sklerozants are created by mixing the liquid sklerozant with air or gas, which can enhance its effectiveness and allow for treatment of larger vessels. The choice of sklerozant depends on the size and type of vessel or lesion being treated, as well as the individual patient's medical history and condition.

Sclerotherapy is primarily used to treat superficial varicose veins and spider veins, but it can also be employed for other conditions like lymphangiomas and certain types of hernias. The procedure is generally performed in an outpatient setting and is considered safe, although potential side effects can include pain, swelling, bruising, and skin discoloration at the injection site. More serious complications are rare but can include allergic reactions or deep vein thrombosis. The effectiveness and longevity of the treatment can vary.
