skillchallenge
Skillchallenge is a structured encounter in role-playing games designed to test a group’s use of skills rather than combat. It originated in Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition, where a skill challenge replaces a traditional combat sequence with a series of skill checks and narrative consequences. In a skill challenge, the game master defines an objective, the required number of successful checks to reach that objective, and the number of failures that ends the challenge in defeat. Players choose appropriate skills and describe actions to attempt, then roll dice to determine success against a set difficulty class.
Each successful check advances the party toward the objective; each failed check contributes to a growing tally
Beyond 4th edition, skill challenges are less formalized but the concept remains in use as an approach
