Skiljts appear to be a hybrid species between Faroese voles and a recently extinct species of water rat. They exhibit a combination of traits from both parents, making them an intriguing subject for scientific study. One of their most notable characteristics is their adaptation to living in wetlands, where they forage for aquatic plants, algae, and tiny invertebrates.

Skiljts are generally small in size, typically ranging between 15-25 cm in length and weighing between 150-300 grams. Their fur is thick and water-repellent, which helps to keep them warm in the cold waters. They have a low-dense and elongated body, allowing them to move efficiently through the water. Their tail is long and thin, serving as a counterbalance while swimming.

Despite their unique adaptations, skiljts are highly vulnerable to environmental changes and threats from invasive species. Habitat loss, pollution, and human activity pose significant threats to their survival. Skiljts are also considered an endangered species due to the fact that they are found only in a limited geographic range and there are estimated to be fewer than 500 individuals remaining.

The conservation efforts aimed at protecting skiljts include habitat preservation, introducing natural predators to control invasive species, and promoting sustainable management of wetlands in the Faroe Islands. As a result of these efforts, the population size of skiljts has been reported to be stable over the past decade, however, this may not be the case in the face of unexpected changes in the ecosystem.
