A skiftesman is a historical official associated with land consolidation in Sweden, tasked with administering the reform process known as skifte. The term derives from skifte, meaning a change or reallocation of land. During the open-field system era, farmland often consisted of numerous scattered strips; skifte aimed to reorganize these into compact, individually owned plots to increase productivity and simplify cultivation.

A skiftesman was typically appointed by local authorities to lead the procedure. Key duties included organizing and supervising surveys, planning new field layouts, and mediating between landowners and tenants. The official would oversee boundary marking, oversee the creation of new cadastral maps, and issue deeds or titles reflecting the redivided land. The process frequently involved negotiations and compensation for those who gained or lost land, as well as the adjudication of disputes before local courts.

The role is most closely associated with Sweden, where agricultural reforms in the 18th and 19th centuries—often described as “skifte” reforms—drastically altered land distribution and farming practices. While the specific term skiftesman is historical, similar land-consolidation procedures and offices existed in other Nordic countries during the same period. With modernization and the professionalization of land surveying, the formal position of skiftesman faded, and its functions were taken over by professional land surveyors and cadastral authorities, such as the Swedish lantmätare.
