A skateboard is a short, narrow board mounted on two trucks with four wheels, designed for riding on streets, ramps, and skate parks. A typical setup includes a deck, trucks, wheels, bearings, and grip tape. The deck provides the standing surface and is usually curved on the ends (concave). Trucks connect the deck to the wheels and allow turning; wheels made of polyurethane roll on various surfaces; bearings reduce friction; grip tape provides traction for the rider.

Decks are commonly 28–32 inches long and 7.5–8.5 inches wide, though sizes vary. Most decks are constructed from multiple layers of maple veneer (often seven-ply), sometimes reinforced with glass, carbon, or other composites.

There are several design categories. The traditional popsicle-shaped deck is common for street and park skating, while longer, wider boards are used for cruising and downhill riding. Special-purpose boards, such as cruisers and longboards, emphasize stability and speed.

Skateboarding emerged in the 1940s–1950s in California as a way for surfers to ride on land. Urethane wheels in the 1970s enabled better grip and maneuverability, leading to modern freestyle, street, and vert styles. Improvements in truck geometry and deck shapes have continued since.

Skateboard use spans transportation, sport, and culture. Maintenance includes inspecting and tightening hardware, cleaning bearings or replacing them, replacing worn wheels or grip tape, and storing dry. Users should wear protective gear and learn proper techniques.
