A sjakkbrett, or chessboard, is a square board divided into 64 equal-sized squares, arranged in an 8x8 grid. The squares are usually arranged so that the corner squares are always light in color, following the Fianchetto pattern.

The chessboard serves as the playing surface for the game of chess, a two-player strategy game involving movement and capture of pieces. Each player begins with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. The board’s alternating color pattern helps players distinguish between their own and their opponent’s pieces, as well as to identify legal moves, such as the requirement that pawns move forward and capture diagonally.
