Sinkitystä refers to the process of galvanizing, which is a method of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron to prevent rusting. This protective coating is applied through various methods, the most common being hot-dip galvanizing. In hot-dip galvanizing, the iron or steel object is immersed in a bath of molten zinc. The molten zinc reacts with the iron or steel to form a metallurgically bonded alloy layer, which is then covered by a layer of pure zinc. This coating provides a durable barrier that protects the underlying metal from corrosion.

The zinc coating acts in two primary ways to prevent rust. Firstly, it provides a physical barrier, preventing moisture and oxygen from reaching the steel surface. Secondly, zinc is more electrochemically active than iron, meaning it will corrode preferentially, sacrificing itself to protect the steel. This is known as sacrificial protection. Even if the zinc coating is scratched, exposing the steel, the zinc surrounding the scratch will continue to protect the steel from rusting.

Galvanizing is widely used in construction for steel structures, guardrails, and roofing, as well as in the automotive industry and for everyday items like nuts, bolts, and wires. The process is effective, relatively inexpensive, and significantly extends the lifespan of steel products when exposed to corrosive environments. The thickness and adherence of the zinc coating are critical factors in its performance.
