Sinalering is the act or system of conveying information through signals. The term is used in Danish and other languages to refer to signaling across many domains, including traffic, telecommunications, and industrial control. The word derives from Latin signum, meaning a sign, combined with the -ering suffix used to form nouns that indicate an action or process.

Historically, signaling began with visual cues such as flag signaling, semaphore, and smoke signals, and later evolved with bells, lanterns, and mechanical indicators. The introduction of electrical and optical signaling allowed faster, more reliable communication over longer distances and paved the way for modern signaling networks.

In contemporary use, signaling plays a central role in traffic systems (traffic lights, road indicators, railway signaling), in telecommunications (exchange and network signaling to set up and manage calls), and in industrial settings (alarm signaling, process indicators, interlocks). In computing and networks, signaling describes the exchange of control information that coordinates data transfer and session management, distinct from the user data payload.

Signals should have standardized meanings and appearances to minimize misinterpretation, with attention to accessibility, including color considerations and clear, unambiguous forms.
