Silmäpussit, technically known as infraorbital edema, are a common cosmetic concern characterized by swelling or puffiness beneath the eyes. These are not to be confused with dark circles, though they can often appear together. The underlying causes of silmäpussit are varied and can include genetics, fluid retention, aging, allergies, and lifestyle factors.

Genetics plays a significant role in predisposing some individuals to developing silmäpussit. The structure of the skin and fat distribution around the eyes can be inherited, leading to a more prominent appearance of puffiness. Aging is another major contributor. As we age, the tissues and muscles supporting the eyelids weaken. The fat that normally helps support the eyes can then move forward into the lower eyelids, causing them to appear puffy. Additionally, the skin loses elasticity, making it more prone to sagging.

Fluid retention can also lead to temporary silmäpussit. This can be exacerbated by consuming salty foods, certain medical conditions like kidney problems, or hormonal changes, particularly in women. Allergies can cause inflammation and swelling in the delicate tissues around the eyes, contributing to puffiness. Lifestyle factors such as lack of sleep, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption can also negatively impact the appearance of the under-eye area, leading to or worsening silmäpussit. Treatment options range from lifestyle modifications and topical creams to more invasive procedures like fillers or surgery, depending on the severity and cause.
