Silmänäytös, often translated as "eye show" or "visual display," refers to a range of phenomena involving the perception of light or patterns not caused by an external light source. These can manifest as flashes, sparks, phosphenes, or geometric shapes. Silmänäytös can be experienced by individuals with or without underlying eye conditions.

One common cause is the stimulation of retinal cells. Gentle pressure applied to the eyeball, such as when rubbing the eyes, can mechanically stimulate the photoreceptor cells, leading to transient light perceptions. Similarly, sudden changes in light conditions, like moving from a dark room to a bright one, can also cause temporary visual disturbances.

In some cases, silmänäytös can be associated with more significant eye conditions. Vitreous syneresis, the liquefaction and separation of the vitreous humor from the retina, can cause floaters, which are perceived as specks or threads, and may be accompanied by flashes of light if the vitreous pulls on the retina. Retinal tears or detachment are serious conditions that often present with sudden flashes and a significant increase in floaters, sometimes described as a curtain or shadow in the field of vision.

Neurological factors can also contribute to silmänäytös. Migraine auras, which often precede a migraine headache, can involve visual disturbances such as zigzag lines, shimmering lights, or blind spots. Certain medications or substances, as well as fatigue and stress, can also trigger these visual phenomena.

While often benign, persistent or sudden changes in the nature of silmänäytös, especially when accompanied by vision loss or other visual disturbances, warrant prompt medical evaluation by an ophthalmologist to rule out serious underlying causes.
