Sierkunst is the Dutch term for the decorative arts, referring to objects whose primary purpose is decorative or ornamental, even when they are also functional. The field covers a wide range of media, including ceramics, porcelain, glass, metalwork, jewelry, textiles, woodwork, furniture, tapestries, wallpaper, mosaics, and other surface ornamentation or applied decoration on objects. Sierkunst emphasizes craftsmanship, material quality, and surface design, with techniques such as carving, casting, inlay, gilding, enameling, and marquetry frequently involved.

Historically, sierkunst developed alongside functional crafts and design movements, spanning periods and styles from classical and baroque to neoclassical, and later movements such as Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, and Art Deco. In museums and art-historical writing, sierkunst is used to distinguish ornamental design from more overtly “fine art” disciplines like painting or sculpture, though the boundary between these domains is often fluid. In the Dutch context, the term is common in cataloging and descriptions of historical objects and ensembles produced for domestic, ceremonial, or public settings.

Contemporary use of the term is more limited in everyday speech but remains a useful category in museums, archives, and scholarly discourse for organizing and interpreting historical objects. In modern design practice, discussions of decorative arts often intersect with craft, ornament, and user experience.
