Sienitauteja is the Finnish term for fungal diseases. These illnesses are caused by fungi, including yeasts, molds, and dermatophytes. Fungal infections range from superficial skin conditions to invasive infections that affect internal organs. Fungi are ubiquitous in the environment and many species are harmless or beneficial, but some can cause disease in humans, animals, or plants, especially under certain conditions.

In humans, fungal diseases are commonly categorized as superficial, mucocutaneous, subcutaneous, or systemic. Superficial infections include dermatophytoses (tinea) and candidiasis of the skin or nails. Mucocutaneous infections involve mucous membranes, such as oral thrush or vaginal candidiasis. Systemic infections can affect the lungs, brain, or bloodstream and are more likely in people with weakened immune systems, diabetes, or after broad-spectrum antibiotic use. Transmission occurs via contact, inhalation of spores, or inoculation of skin.

In plants, fungal pathogens cause diseases such as powdery mildew, rusts, and blights, reducing yield and quality. In animals, fungi can cause ringworm in pets and livestock, as well as opportunistic infections in immunocompromised hosts. Fungal diseases are also of ecological and agricultural importance due to their impact on crops, forests, and biodiversity.

Diagnosis typically relies on clinical assessment supported by laboratory tests, including microscopy, culture, antigen detection, and molecular methods. Treatments vary by site and severity and include topical antifungals for skin infections and systemic antifungals (such as azoles, allylamines, or polyenes) for invasive disease. Prevention focuses on hygiene, moisture control, proper wound care, and, in agriculture, resistant varieties and crop management.
