Sidewinds are a type of snake found in the deserts of North America, particularly in the southwestern United States and parts of Mexico. They are characterized by their unique method of locomotion, known as sidewinding. This involves moving in a series of S-shaped curves, lifting and placing sections of their body across the sand without touching much of the ground at any one time. This allows them to move efficiently over loose, sandy terrain and minimizes their contact with the hot desert surface.

These vipers are typically small to medium in size, with a stout body and a broad, triangular head. Their coloration often provides excellent camouflage against the desert landscape, usually featuring sandy or reddish-brown hues with patterns of darker blotches or bands. Sidewinds are nocturnal or crepuscular, meaning they are most active during the cooler hours of dawn and dusk, or at night, to avoid the extreme heat of the day.

As venomous snakes, sidewinds possess fangs that deliver a potent hemotoxic venom. Their diet primarily consists of small mammals, lizards, and birds. While their venom can be medically significant to humans, they are generally not considered aggressive and will typically flee rather than confront. However, if threatened or cornered, they will defend themselves. Their characteristic sidewinding movement is a key adaptation for survival in their arid environment.
