shchedryi

Shchedryi is a Ukrainian adjective derived from the noun щедрість (meaning “generosity”) and is used to describe a person, action, or thing that displays a ready willingness to give or share. The word originates from the Proto‑Slavic root "sъ-chetvrъ" which is related to the notion of “giving” or “sharing,” and is cognate with its Russian counterpart щедрый and the old West Slavic šćedry . Linguists trace the term back to the early Middle High Slavic period when the root ‑дрий was used as an intensifier for generosity.

In everyday Ukrainian usage, shchedryi frequently appears as a compliment directed at an individual who provides help, resources, or support. It is also applied to describe gifts, charitable donations, or even the abundance of food, e.g., “щедрий пиріг” meaning a plentiful cake. The adjective can be used as a predicate in a sentence (“Він щедрий»), or as part of idiomatic expressions such as “дати щедрий додаток” (hand out a big contribution).

The word has a positive connotation in cultural contexts, especially during seasonal celebrations such as Christmas and Easter when families distribute gifts and meals to the less fortunate. In literature, several 19th‑century Ukrainian writers, like Ivan Franko and Lesya Ukrainka, employ shchedryi to underscore moral virtues of their protagonists.

Because of its overlap with the Russian щедрый, literature that crosses regional boundaries often uses either form. In contemporary everyday speech outside literary contexts, Ukrainian speakers may prefer the European Cyrillic spelling щедрý as a more phonetic representation, while the Latin transliteration shchedryi remains handy in academic and international settings.
