Shashmaqom is a traditional Central Asian classical music genre associated with Tajik and Uzbek communities, especially in Tajikistan and the historic urban centers of Bukhara and Samarkand. The name Shashmaqom means “six maqoms” in Tajik and Persian, referring to its core repertoire organized around six modal centers. The tradition blends Persianate aesthetics with Turkic and local Central Asian musical practices.

Historically, Shashmaqom developed in urban courts and households from the late medieval period onward, with Bukhara and Samarkand playing pivotal roles. It was transmitted through intimate master–apprentice networks and preserved through formal and informal means. In the 20th century, it was increasingly taught in conservatories and scholarly programs. In 2003, UNESCO inscribed Shashmaqom on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, acknowledging its cultural significance.

Performance practice centers on the vocal line, often led by a solo singer supported by a small instrumental ensemble. Typical instruments include the dutar and rubab (long-necked lutes), tanbur, ghijak, and percussion such as the doira. The six maqoms provide the melodic framework for a sequence of songs and instrumental pieces, with texts drawn from classical Persian-language poetry and regional Tajik or Uzbek repertoire. Performances emphasize ornate melodic elaboration, expressive ornamentation, and improvisation within the modal rules.

Culturally, Shashmaqom is a defining element of Tajik and Uzbek musical heritage, taught in music schools and preserved in traditional, folk, and concert settings. It continues to be performed at formal occasions, ceremonies, and cultural events, sustaining a living link to Central Asia’s historical musical traditions.
