Sharpenability is a term used to describe how amenable a signal, image, or function is to sharpening operations that increase edge contrast and high-frequency content. It captures, in a broad sense, the potential to enhance perceived sharpness without producing unacceptable artifacts. The concept is used across image processing, signal processing, and numerical analysis, and its specifics depend on the context.

In imaging, sharpening typically employs high-pass filtering, unsharp masking, or deconvolution with a known or estimated blur kernel (point spread function). The degree of sharpenability depends on factors such as the amount and scale of blur, the level and spectral distribution of noise, sampling density, and dynamic range. Highly blurred or pixelated, noisy data may be difficult to sharpen robustly, often leading to ringing, overshoot, or amplified noise. Practitioners balance sharpening strength against noise amplification, sometimes using regularization, edge-preserving methods, or iterative deconvolution.

Mathematically, sharpenability can be discussed in terms of the conditioning of a deblurring or deconvolution problem. If the blur operator is well-behaved (well conditioned) and the data have sufficient signal-to-noise ratio, sharpening operators can recover high-frequency details stably. Conversely, ill-posed problems or near-singular blur operators yield poor sharpenability, with results highly sensitive to noise.

In practice, assessments of sharpenability rely on frequency-domain analyses (e.g., transfer functions, MTF) and empirical testing on representative data. Related concepts include edge enhancement, deconvolution, regularization, and artifact control in image restoration.
