A sgian, also known as a sgian-dubh, is a small, single-edged knife traditionally carried in the top of the sock or stocking, with the hilt protruding. It is a part of Scottish Highland dress. The name is derived from the Gaelic words "sgian" meaning knife and "dubh" meaning black, possibly referring to the black wooden or bone hilt, or to the fact that it was a concealed weapon.
