A sexologist is a professional who studies human sexuality and may work in clinical, educational, or research settings. The term encompasses researchers, educators, and clinicians who investigate sexual development, behavior, health, function, and relationships, and who may provide information, therapy, or guidance.

In clinical practice, sexologists may diagnose and treat sexual dysfunctions, provide sex therapy for individuals or couples, and address concerns such as low sexual desire, arousal or orgasm disorders, pain during intercourse, or consequences of sexual trauma. They also offer education on consent, communication, safe practices, and inclusive care for diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.

Education and credentials vary by country. Many hold degrees in medicine, psychology, counseling, social work, or sexology, with additional specialized training in sex therapy or sexual medicine. In the United States, certification as a sex therapist is commonly offered by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT); licensure depends on the profession.

The modern discipline of sexology developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as researchers and clinicians explored human sexuality, reproduction, and sexual behavior. Professional standards emphasize ethics, confidentiality, informed consent, and cultural competence.
