A sentralstøvsuger, also known as a central vacuum cleaner, is a built-in cleaning system. It consists of a central power unit and dust collection system, typically installed in a basement, garage, or utility room. Ductwork runs through the walls of the building, connecting the central unit to inlet ports located in various rooms. These ports allow for the attachment of flexible hoses and cleaning attachments.

When a hose is plugged into a wall port, it activates the central unit. The motor and fan create a strong suction that pulls dirt, dust, and debris through the ductwork to the central unit. There, the particles are collected in a large receptacle, often a bag or canister, which requires emptying periodically, typically much less frequently than with a portable vacuum.

Sentralstøvsugere offer several advantages. The exhaust air from the central unit is expelled outside the living space, which can improve indoor air quality by preventing the recirculation of fine dust and allergens. They are also generally quieter than portable vacuums, as the motor and noise-generating components are located away from the living areas. The absence of a portable unit means less weight to carry and no power cord to manage, making cleaning potentially easier. Installation is usually done during construction but can also be retrofitted into existing homes.
