This process involves transforming raw materials, typically silicon, into functional electronic components. The primary goal is to create intricate patterns of transistors, capacitors, and other electronic structures on the surface of a semiconductor wafer.

The process begins with the preparation of the semiconductor wafer, usually made from highly purified silicon. The wafer is then subjected to various stages, including oxidation, photolithography, etching, doping, and deposition. Oxidation involves growing a thin layer of silicon dioxide on the wafer's surface, which acts as an insulating layer. Photolithography is a critical step where a light-sensitive chemical, called photoresist, is applied to the wafer, and a pattern is transferred onto it using light. This pattern serves as a template for the subsequent etching process, which removes unwanted material.

Doping is the process of introducing impurities into the semiconductor to alter its electrical properties. This can be done through techniques like ion implantation or diffusion. Deposition involves adding layers of material, such as metals or insulators, onto the wafer's surface. These layers can be deposited through methods like chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or physical vapor deposition (PVD).

The semiconductor processing steps are repeated multiple times to build up the complex structures required for modern ICs. Each layer and pattern must be precisely aligned and fabricated to ensure the final device functions correctly. The entire process is carried out in highly controlled environments, often using cleanrooms to minimize contamination.
