The brand is marketed internationally, with the trademark strongly associated with the United Kingdom, where “Sellotape” is often used as a generic term for clear adhesive tape. Ownership of the brand has been held by the German consumer goods company Henkel in many markets.

Most Sellotape products consist of a thin film of polymer (commonly polypropylene or a similar material) coated on one side with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. The consumer versions are designed for hand tearing and adhere to a variety of common surfaces with light finger pressure.
