Self-modifying, or self-modifying code, refers to software that alters its own instructions or structure while it is running, enabling changes to behavior without recompilation. The modification may affect code, data, or both, and is typically accomplished by writing into executable memory or by generating new code in place.

Historically, self-modifying code emerged in early computing when memory and bandwidth were scarce. Programmers patched instructions on the fly to save space or implement dynamic routines. The technique required careful handling of processor caches and memory protection and often made debugging difficult. As computer architectures evolved with stronger protections and clearer separation of code and data, self-modifying code became harder to maintain and is now relatively rare in general software.

Today, self-modification is largely avoided in mainstream programs, but the concept persists in controlled contexts such as just-in-time compilation, dynamic code generation, and certain low-level optimizations. In these cases, new or altered code is typically produced in a managed region of memory and is subject to the operating system’s safeguards, rather than overwriting existing instructions in place. Self-modifying code can undermine performance predictability, security policies, and reliability, and modern systems often favor non-modifying techniques or explicit, guarded patching.

In security and software analysis, self-modifying techniques appear in discussions of polymorphic or metamorphic malware, which mutate their own code to evade detection. In artificial intelligence and autonomous systems, the notion of self-modifying or self-improving agents explores changing policies or code based on experience, raising questions about safety, alignment, and controllability.
