The term is commonly used in Norwegian medical literature and in clinical practice to describe comorbidities such as osteoporosis that follows long‑term corticosteroid therapy, or neuropathic pain that develops after a traumatic nerve injury.

The mechanisms linking a primary disease to a secondary condition involve direct biological effects, altered hemodynamics, maladaptive immune responses, or social and behavioral changes that compound the disease burden. For example, chronic heart failure can lead to pulmonary hypertension, while prolonged immobility during hospitalization can precipitate deep vein thrombosis. In some cases, medication side effects become the initiating factor for a secondary disease; for instance, tamoxifen use in breast cancer patients can increase the risk of venous thromboembolism.

Diagnosing a sekundærtilstand requires a careful review of the patient’s history, medication profile, and laboratory or imaging studies that highlight the secondary pathology. Management focuses on treating both the primary disease and the secondary condition, often necessitating a multidisciplinary approach.
