Sejtátültetések, or cell transplantation, is a medical procedure involving the transfer of cells from one location to another. This can be within the same individual (autologous transplantation) or from a donor to a recipient (allogeneic transplantation). The primary goal of cell transplantation is to replace damaged or diseased cells with healthy ones, thereby restoring function or treating a specific condition.

The most common types of cell transplantation involve hematopoietic stem cells, often referred to as bone marrow transplants. These procedures are used to treat various blood cancers, bone marrow disorders, and certain genetic diseases. Hematopoietic stem cells, found in bone marrow, peripheral blood, and umbilical cord blood, have the ability to differentiate into all types of blood cells.

Beyond stem cell transplants, other forms of cell transplantation are being explored and utilized. These include the transplantation of pancreatic islet cells for type 1 diabetes, corneal cells for vision restoration, and neuronal cells for neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's. Research is also ongoing into regenerative medicine applications, where transplanted cells are intended to repair damaged tissues and organs.

The success of cell transplantation depends on several factors, including the source and quality of the cells, the compatibility between donor and recipient (especially in allogeneic transplants), and the management of potential complications such as graft-versus-host disease or rejection. While a powerful therapeutic tool, cell transplantation remains a complex medical intervention requiring careful patient selection and specialized medical care.
