Common functions include determining grain size distribution, mineralogical composition, chemical content, moisture, organic matter, density, and porosity. Particle size analysis typically relies on sieve methods, hydrometer or pipette techniques, and increasingly laser diffraction, each providing different resolutions and applicable ranges. Mineralogical and chemical analyses use methods such as X-ray diffraction for mineral phases, X-ray fluorescence for elemental composition, and sometimes scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy for micro-scale features. Organic content and moisture are often quantified by loss on ignition or thermogravimetric analysis.

In-situ sediment analysers may incorporate sensors or probes to measure turbidity, sediment concentration, or optical properties, sometimes in combination with acoustic or imaging tools to assess sediment transport and deposition processes. Data outputs usually include grain size distribution curves, fines content, mineralogical profiles, and elemental concentrations, along with quality flags and uncertainty estimates.

Applications span coastal and river engineering, dredging and sediment management, environmental impact assessment, lake and marine sediment studies, and archaeological or paleoenvironments research. Challenges include ensuring representative sampling, calibration across methods, and comparability of results between instruments and laboratories.
