Secondarywound is a term encountered in wound care to describe a second wound that develops in or beside tissue that has already sustained an initial injury or surgical incision. Secondarywounds are considered distinct from primary wounds, which are closed during the initial procedure or injury, and from wounds healing by secondary intention, which heal gradually by granulation and contraction without immediate closure.

Causes include infection, dehiscence of a closed wound, tissue necrosis, renewed pressure or shear, ischemia, or relapse of the underlying condition. Risk factors align with those that impair healing, such as poor perfusion, malnutrition, diabetes, circulatory disorders, and advanced age.
