Seborrhoeic dermatitis, often colloquially referred to as seborrhoe, is a common, chronic inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the scalp, face, and chest. It is characterized by flaky, white to yellowish scales on oily areas of the skin. The exact cause of seborrhoeic dermatitis is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve an abnormal immune response to Malassezia yeast, a fungus that normally lives on the skin. Other contributing factors may include genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, stress, and certain medical conditions.

The condition typically presents with redness, itching, and scaling. On the scalp, it can manifest as dandruff. On the face, it commonly appears in the eyebrows, along the sides of the nose, and behind the ears. In infants, a milder form known as cradle cap can occur on the scalp. Seborrhoeic dermatitis can fluctuate in severity, with periods of remission and exacerbation.

Diagnosis is usually made through a visual examination of the affected skin. Treatment aims to control the symptoms and reduce inflammation. This often involves topical antifungal medications, such as shampoos or creams containing ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or zinc pyrithione. In more severe cases, corticosteroid creams may be prescribed for short-term use to reduce inflammation and itching. Lifestyle adjustments, such as stress management and avoiding known triggers, can also be beneficial. While seborrhoeic dermatitis is a chronic condition, it can be effectively managed with appropriate treatment.
