Satellitradio refers to radio programming transmitted via communications satellites, enabling wide-area coverage that extends beyond the reach of traditional terrestrial AM and FM networks. Programs are delivered from studios to orbiting satellites, then downlinked to receivers in vehicles, homes, or portable devices, where the audio is decoded and played.

Most systems rely on geostationary satellites positioned high above the equator to provide a continuous broadcast footprint. A network of satellites, ground uplinks, and Earth stations supports channel distribution and handoffs as listeners move across the globe. Content is typically digital, using compression and error-correction schemes to maintain audio quality with relatively high receiver sensitivity.

Commercial satellite radio began in the United States in the early 2000s with separate services that later merged in 2008 to form Sirius XM Holdings. These networks offer hundreds of channels, including music, sports, talk, and weather information, under subscription plans. Other regions have experimented with satellite radio providers, but the American model is the most prominent to date; some historical services have since ceased operations.

Receivers range from in-car radios and aftermarket tuners to portable handheld units and home receivers. Car systems are commonly built into modern infotainment setups, often with satellite antennae integrated into the vehicle. While satellite radio offers broad coverage, performance can be affected by terrain, weather, or obstructions, and service requires a subscription.
