Satellitesbased is a term used to describe systems, services, or architectures that rely primarily on artificial satellites to perform communication, navigation, observation, or sensing tasks. It denotes an infrastructure where spaceborne platforms provide core functionality, often in combination with ground networks and user terminals to achieve wide-area coverage.

Applications commonly associated with satellitesbased systems include satellite communications (Internet and broadcasting), remote sensing and Earth observation, and navigation and timing services. Satellite relays enable connectivity in remote or disaster-affected regions, while orbits provide regional or global reach not easily achieved by terrestrial networks.

Key components of a satellitesbased solution include satellites in specified orbits, ground stations and gateways, user terminals, and mission control centers. Link management, frequency regulation, and space-to-ground data handling form the technical backbone of such systems.

Historically, satellitesbased concepts emerged with early communications satellites and have evolved toward constellations in low, medium, and geostationary orbits. Late 20th and early 21st century developments led to large-scale LEO constellations (for example in commercial broadband and global navigation) alongside traditional GEO satellites.

Benefits of satellitesbased architectures include wide coverage, rapid deployment to underserved areas, resilience against some terrestrial failures, and the ability to deliver timing and positioning services globally. Challenges include latency for GEO systems, high capital and maintenance costs, spectrum management, space debris, regulatory hurdles, and the need for robust ground infrastructure and user terminals.
