sanitaria

Sanitaria is a term used in several Romance languages to denote sanitary facilities and related equipment. In English, the form is uncommon as a stand-alone noun, but appears in compound terms such as sanitary fittings, sanitaryware, and sanitation facilities. The term encompasses both fixtures and systems designed to promote hygiene.

In Spanish and Italian, sanitario/a commonly denotes toilets, bathrooms, or public restrooms, as well as the fixtures within them (toilets, sinks, showers). More broadly, it can refer to sanitary engineering elements, including plumbing, drainage networks, and equipment used to maintain hygiene and prevent contamination.

Public health and urban planning treat sanitation as a system for collecting, treating, and safely disposing of wastewater, along with access to clean water and hygienic facilities. Improvements in sanitation reduce the burden of diarrheal and other waterborne diseases and are central to life expectancy and development.

Global targets, such as Sustainable Development Goal 6, aim for universal access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation, with attention to accessibility, affordability, and gender-sensitive facilities, as well as reliable operation and maintenance of sanitation infrastructure.
