Saltvattenspärlor, often referred to as saltwater pearls, are gemstones produced by mollusks, primarily oysters and mussels, that live in saltwater environments. Unlike freshwater pearls, which come from mollusks found in rivers, lakes, and ponds, saltwater pearls originate from the ocean. The process of pearl formation begins when an irritant, such as a parasite or a piece of debris, enters the mollusk's soft body. In response, the mollusk secretes layers of nacre, a lustrous substance composed of calcium carbonate and conchiolin, around the irritant. Over time, these layers build up, forming a pearl.
