Sünnitusarme, commonly known as stretch marks, are a type of scar that appears on the skin when it is stretched or shrunk rapidly. This rapid change causes the collagen and elastin in the skin to rupture. As the skin heals, these scars may appear as faint lines or streaks.

These marks are frequently associated with pregnancy, hence the Estonian term "sünnitusarme" which translates to "birth marks" or more literally "childbirth scars." During pregnancy, the abdomen, breasts, thighs, and buttocks are common areas where these marks develop due to the skin stretching to accommodate the growing fetus and hormonal changes. However, they can also occur in adolescents during growth spurts, in individuals who gain or lose a significant amount of weight quickly, and in those with certain medical conditions or who use corticosteroid medications.

Sünnitusarme typically start as reddish, purplish, or brownish lines, depending on skin tone. Over time, they tend to fade to a lighter color, often silvery or white, and may become less noticeable. While they do not pose a health risk, some individuals may find them cosmetically undesirable. Various topical treatments, laser therapies, and microdermabrasion are available, though their effectiveness can vary. Prevention is difficult, as the tendency to develop stretch marks is often genetic. Maintaining healthy skin hydration and gradual weight changes can be beneficial.
