As the wire electrode is fed, it also acts as the filler metal, replenishing the weld pool and forming the joint. There are several variations of sähkölankhitsaus, with the most common being Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), often referred to as MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding or MAG (Metal Active Gas) welding depending on the shielding gas used. In GMAW, a shielding gas is supplied through the welding gun to protect the weld pool from atmospheric contamination, which can weaken the weld.
