Sähkölämmittimet, or electric heaters, are devices that convert electrical energy into thermal energy to heat spaces. They are a common and versatile heating solution found in homes, offices, and various other environments. Different types of electric heaters exist, each employing distinct methods for heat generation and distribution.

Common examples include resistance heaters, which use a heating element, typically made of nichrome wire, that heats up when electricity passes through it. This heat is then radiated or convected into the room. Convection heaters, such as oil-filled radiators, circulate air over a heated element, warming the air which then rises and spreads. Radiant heaters, like infrared panels or quartz heaters, emit electromagnetic radiation that directly heats objects and people in their path, similar to how the sun warms the earth. Fan heaters use a heating element and a fan to quickly blow heated air into a space, offering rapid but often localized heating.

The efficiency of electric heaters is often discussed. While they convert nearly 100% of the electricity they consume into heat, the cost-effectiveness depends on the price of electricity in a given region and the specific heating needs. They are generally considered easy to install and maintain, requiring no complex piping or fuel storage. However, their operational cost can be higher compared to other heating methods, especially in areas with expensive electricity. Their convenience, safety features, and flexibility in spot heating make them a popular choice for supplementary or primary heating in many situations.
