røttelivet

Røttelivet refers to the life of plant roots and their role in soil ecosystems. It includes the architecture of root systems, root hairs, and the dynamic processes by which roots explore soil, take up water and nutrients, and allocate carbon to growth and storage.

Roots do not act alone. They secrete organic compounds, or exudates, that alter the surrounding soil—feeding microbes, mobilizing nutrients, and shaping the rhizosphere. Many plants form mutualistic associations with soil fungi (mycorrhizae) and with bacteria, which expand nutrient uptake, especially phosphorus and micronutrients, and can influence disease resistance and soil aggregation.

Environmental conditions such as soil texture, moisture, pH, temperature, and nutrient availability strongly influence røttelivet. Root depth, branching, and turnover vary by species and climate, affecting carbon input to soils and the pace of nutrient cycling. Root systems also contribute to soil structure and erosion resistance by binding aggregates.

It mediates plant-plant and plant-microbe interactions and determines drought tolerance and growth efficiency. Study and measurement: researchers study røttelivet using root excavation and coring, non-destructive imaging like minirhizotrons, isotope tracing, and molecular methods to characterize root-associated microbiomes. In Norwegian usage, røttelivet often serves as an umbrella term for below-ground plant life.
