Røntgendenstråling, also known as X-rays, is a form of electromagnetic radiation. It was discovered by German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen in 1895. Röntgenstråling has a shorter wavelength and higher frequency than visible light, placing it between ultraviolet radiation and gamma rays on the electromagnetic spectrum.

The primary method for generating røntgendenstråling involves accelerating electrons to high speeds and then abruptly decelerating them when they strike a metal target. This rapid change in electron velocity causes the emission of X-rays. The energy of the emitted X-rays is determined by the accelerating voltage applied to the electrons and the nature of the target material.

Røntgendenstråling possesses the ability to penetrate many materials that are opaque to visible light. This property makes it extremely useful in various applications, most notably in medical imaging. When directed through the human body, X-rays are absorbed to different degrees by various tissues and organs. Dense structures like bones absorb more X-rays, appearing white on a photographic plate or digital detector, while softer tissues allow more radiation to pass through, appearing in shades of gray or black. This differential absorption allows for the visualization of internal structures, aiding in the diagnosis of fractures, diseases, and other medical conditions.

Beyond medical diagnostics, røntgendenstråling finds use in industrial radiography for inspecting materials, in security scanners at airports, and in scientific research for analyzing crystal structures. However, prolonged exposure to high levels of røntgendenstråling can be harmful, necessitating protective measures during its use.
